John

Introduction 서론

Today, we celebrate the greatest day in the history of the world! / This morning, we celebrate the truth that Jesus Christ was crucified on a Roman cross, was buried in a sealed tomb, and on the third day He arose from the grave. / This one truth sets Christianity apart from every other religion in the world. / All other religious leaders have died.  Buddha died!  Mohammed died!  Confucius died! / Every founder of every religion that has ever existed has died. / However, only One has risen from the dead!/  His Name is Jesus!/  If Jesus had not arisen from the dead, then everything He did would have been in vain./ If Jesus Christ is not alive, then we have no salvation and there is no hope for the world. / The Good News is HE LIVES!/ On that Resurrection morning, God rolled the stone away so that the visitors could see inside the empty tomb and know that Jesus was not there. /

Our text for this morning’s message is found in John 20:1-18./  I borrowed the first line from the beautiful resurrection hymn, “He Lives,” for the title of my sermon: “I Serve A Risen Savior.” / That is the message for us today in a nutshell./  Our Savior lives and rules and reigns in the world today. / He is here with us right now./  And His promise is that He will never leave us nor forsake us. / He is walking with us during these tough times, going before us to lead the way, and He will continue to be with us until He calls us home to be with Him./  Listen to God’s Word, as we read the story of that first Easter morning /(read text).  I want us to focus on Mary’s discoveries on the resurrection morning. / She made three amazing discoveries that day that we need to remember, for they have great significance for our lives today./

I.              Mary Discovered the Empty Tomb (vv. 1-10)/

John tells us in verse 25 of the previous chapter that Mary Magdalene was one of the three women named Mary that stood at the foot of the cross with him as Jesus was dying.  /While the other disciples were hiding in fear, Mary the Mother of Jesus, Mary the aunt of Jesus and Mary Magdalene stood with John and watched Jesus hanging between earth and Heaven to bridge the gap between sinful men and Holy God./ This same Mary, who was truly devoted to the Lord, was with a group of women who came early in the morning to visit the tomb of the Lord./  Some might question why they came so early, but Mark and Luke tell us that they came with spices hoping to anoint the body of Jesus. / These perfumed spices were used to cover the odor of death, so that loved ones could remain with the body for as long as possible./ This was the third day, their last chance to visit Jesus./  Remember what Martha said of Lazarus when Jesus told them to roll the stone from his grave: “Lord by this time he stinks, for he has been dead four days” (John 11:39)./  So, this would be their final opportunity to pay their respects to the Lord. /

Yet, when Mary arrived at the tomb, she made her first discovery./  The stone was rolled away and the tomb was empty! / She ran to tell Peter and John that the body of Jesus had been removed from the tomb to an unknown location. / As the disciples raced to the gravesite, John was first to arrive and looked into the tomb to confirm Mary’s discovery. / The body of Jesus was missing but the grave clothes were still there./ When impetuous Peter arrived, he entered the tomb to see for himself./ He found that the handkerchief that was wrapped around the head was neatly folded in a separate place from the burial cloths that were on his body./  John tells us that he joined Peter in the tomb and notes that he saw and believed./  What did John see?/  John saw an orderly scene./  Not what you would find if the body was removed in haste or if grave robbers had struck. / He saw that the linens were undisturbed and the handkerchief was neatly folded. / If the body had been moved, then the linens would be gone, as well./ If the body were unwrapped, then the cloths would be in disarray. / Yet, they were folded in place as they were on the Lord’s body./ Seeing that led John to believe that the Lord had arisen from the dead./  At that point, Peter and John returned to their homes, but Mary remained at the tomb./

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of the empty tomb to Christianity./ There had to be a crucifixion or there would be no resurrection./ At the same time, had the story of Jesus ended at the cross and the tomb, then our faith would be in vain./  Christianity would be like every other world religion that tries to deify an historical figure that died and was never heard from again./  Yet, the empty tomb separates Christianity from every other belief system./We serve a risen Savior. / The empty tomb is evidence of that fact. / We have a Living Lord that we can talk with and know that He hears, He understands, and He helps us through life./  Yet, I want you to also see Mary’s second discovery on the first Easter morning./

II.            Mary Discovered the Angels Within the Tomb (vv. 11-13)/

At this point, Mary still believed that someone had taken the body of Jesus away./  John tells us that she stood outside of the tomb and was weeping. / The word used here reveals a loud expression of grief. / And as she was wailing, she stooped down to finally look inside the tomb. / It was then that she discovered two angels seated at where the head and feet of Jesus had been placed./  I find it interesting that angels were in attendance at the Incarnation, when Jesus was born, and now again at the Resurrection./  I believe there were angels assigned to attend to the needs of Jesus throughout His earthly ministry, just as there are angels watching over us./These messengers from God questioned why Mary was weeping./  She told them that she was upset because the body of Jesus had been removed to an unknown location./  Matthew and Mark tell us that the angels announced to Mary that Jesus was not there in the tomb because “He is risen!”/

Have you ever wondered why the angels appeared to Mary but not to Peter and John? / It is not for us to know how God chooses to reveal His plans to mankind./ Yet, I think this reveals something about the depth of Mary’s love for Jesus./ She is the one who lingered outside the tomb after Peter and John left. / She had a hard time tearing herself away from the last place where she had seen her Lord.  /We find in Matthew 27:61 that Mary Magdalene and the other Mary followed the men who carried Jesus’ body to the tomb. / She watched as the stone was rolled in front of the tomb. / These angels were there to comfort her in her time of suffering and sorrow./

I know that God sends messengers of mercy to us in times of pain and grief./  They may appear as human beings: family members, friends, pastors or fellow church members. / I have watched this happen hundreds of times, as our church family has reached out in love to minister to one another. / I have also had times when God met a need in my life through strangers who had no way of knowing that I was hurting or needed their help./  I’ve seen God send the exact amount of money that we were short at the time to meet our financial obligations. / Hebrews 13:2 warned believers to show hospitality to strangers because some have unknowingly “entertained angels.” /  I remember one time when our church bus full of senior adults broke down on the side of the road in a rural area. / God sent us two scruffy looking angels to help us./  They were covered with grease, with some wild looking hair, but they took care of us and only charged us $20 for the repair./  Mary found the empty tomb and the two angelic heralds that announced the resurrection, but her day of discovery wasn’t over yet./  Her third discovery was the most exciting of all, for John tells us that…

III.          Mary Discovered the Risen Savior (vv. 14-18)/

John tells us that as Mary finished talking with the angels, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognize Him./ Some commentators attribute her failure to recognize Jesus to the tears she was shedding. / I think it was merely human nature not to expect to see someone who you had watched die three days earlier./  Jesus asked Mary the same question that the angels had asked: “Why are you weeping?” / Then, He added: “Whom are you seeking?” / Mary assumed the man was the gardener and thought he might have moved the body of Jesus./  Yet, when Jesus called her by her name, she recognized Him as the Master, “Rabboni.”/ Jesus warned her not to touch Him because He had not yet ascended to the Father. / He also told her to go and tell the disciples that He had risen and was going to the Father. / Mary came to the tomb that morning seeking the dead body of Jesus./ Instead, she discovered that He was alive and ascending to the Father to be our advocate with His Father, who was now our Father, and His God, who was now our God./  Not only did Mary discover that Jesus had risen but also that there was a new relationship between God and those who by faith have trusted in Jesus./

Let me ask you this morning, have you discovered the risen Savior? / I do not mean that you have heard the Easter story. / Many have heard the story, but it does not mean anything more to them than just another good piece of literature. / My question for you is: Have you had a personal encounter with the living, Lord Jesus?/  Do you know Him as your Lord and Savior? / Are you trusting in Him to guide you and direct your steps in life? / Are you seeking to follow His Word and to do His will in your life?/ I hope you have made this important discovery. / If not, you can settle it today by asking Jesus to forgive you of your sins and to come into your heart./

Let me close with the lyrics to the song from which I got the title of this message: “He Lives.”/

I serve a risen Savior, He’s in the world today. / I know that He is living, whatever men may say./  I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer and just the time I need Him, He’s always near./

In all the world around me I see His loving care./ And though my heart grows weary, I never will despair./  I know that He is leading through all the stormy blast. /The day of His appearing will come at last./

Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, Lift up your voice and sing,/ Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ, the King./  The Hope of all who seek Him, the Help of all who find./  None other is so loving, so good and kind./

Chorus:

He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today. / He walks with me and talks with me, Along life’s narrow way./  He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart./  You ask me how I know He lives?  He lives within my heart!/. My prayer is that you know that Jesus is alive today because He lives within your heart and is guiding you throughout your daily life!/.
